Capturing your family memories during a Denver photo session is an exciting experience but sometimes can be nerve-wracking for some family members who might feel shy in front of the camera. The key to authentic and genuine photos is ensuring the comfort of these family members. Whether it’s a little one needing to warm up, a quiet teenager, or a more soft-spoken and reserved parent – it’s my job to help them feel comfortable during their photos! As a Denver family photographer, I’ve seen how quickly even the shyest family members can come out of their shells with simple strategies. Throughout the blog, I’ll share a few tips and tricks to ensure even the quietest member of your family is smiling during your Denver photo session.
Have a Pre-Session Chat
Before bringing the camera out, I am happy to chat with you and your family about any worries or wishes. This will help everyone become more comfortable taking photos and getting to know me a little. During these conversations, we can discuss preferences for the photo session and my strategies for success. Opening communication about what we’re planning before taking photos allows everyone to get on the same page and be comfortable. This avoids a lot of upset kiddos and parents alike!
Incorporate Fun Activities or Games at Denver Photo Session
One of my favorite tips I like to share with families, especially those with shy family members, is to plan an activity during your Denver photo session. When working with young kids, getting them to open up and be themselves in front of the camera can be challenging. However, their authentic selves quickly emerge when we allow them to be kids and introduce play. An activity doesn’t have to mean anything complicated (unless you want it to!) If you’re planning an outdoor session, bring bubbles or a blanket for simple family fun. Consider playing a game of tag to kick off your photos; this allows everyone to have fun and relax right off the bat. You know your kids best and can always suggest something that is uniquely ‘you’!
Use Candid Shots Instead of Posed Photos
When capturing photos of shy family members, posed photos can sometimes have the effect of feeling put on the spot. All eyes are on them, which can be a lot of pressure. Over the years as a family photographer, I’ve adapted a lifestyle approach that involves capturing more candid shots focused on connection. This allows genuine emotions and relationships to shine authentically outside posed photos. These types of images may still be gently posed or prompted, but in a way that promotes true interactions. Shy family members usually find it easier to get comfortable and be themselves in front of the camera with this approach.
Allow Them to Bring a Personal Item to the Denver Photo Session
Lastly, allow them to bring a personal item or prop to your Denver photo session to help put them at ease. Often, children become attached to a particular toy or stuffed animal; so sometimes it’s noice to allow them to bring it to your photo session. It’ll make for special memories to reflect on and a much more enjoyable experience for them while taking these photos. They’ll be able to play with their toy and take unique photos, allowing their sweet personality to shine and get comfortable in front of the camera quickly. We can sneak their item out for a few pictures as photos go on. Don’t worry!
While you may be worried that your Denver photo session will be impossible with your different personalities, I promise you it isn’t! Trust your photographer to be able to encourage them to open up and have a great experience together.
