Spring is on its way, and while we anxiously await its arrival, I’m sharing some of my favorite fashion finds for the season. From maxi dresses for the mamas to budget friendly outfits for the men and kids, I’m hoping this blog is the only place you’ll need to shop for your spring family session! (Updated for 2023!)
Women
In case you haven’t already heard, I truly believe that maxi dresses are a perfect choice for any photo session, regardless of the season. They give you the freedom to move, they show movement beautifully, and there’s truly a style for everyone! But for spring, here are a few favorites:
Pair one of these flirty, flowy maxis with some budget friendly finds from Target for the perfect spring look! Pictured from left to right, I love this chambray maxi from Venus, as well as this gorgeous off the shoulder watercolor maxi from Hawaiian brand Khush. The swiss dot tulle look is the perfect look for your session (see for yourself here!) and is by Joyfolie (a great place to shop for lots of photo session styles), and for my all time favorite- this beautiful flowy and embroidered Hibiscus Heaven maxi dress is from Free People (also featured in this session!)
Hair accessories in neutral colors or pastels can compliment just about any hair style or outfit. They also won’t cover your face, like a hat might.
However, this fun straw hat comes in five great neutral, earth tones and is the spring alternative to the felt hats we all love for fall and winter. It would be a great piece to use as a prop or throw on for a few shots!
Men
For men, basics go a long way, but selecting great colors that compliment mom’s dress and kids’ outfits is key! Target has some great choices in short sleeve and long sleeve tees in beautiful spring colors and earth tones:
Men’s Standard Fit Lyndale Short Sleeve Crew Neck T-Shirt
Men’s Standard Fit Long Sleeve Crewneck Pocket T-Shirt
And while I am mostly sticking to target recommendations here- I have to share these awesome men’s hyper stretch jeans from Express, available in several great spring colors! Try them in a berry-brown, or sage green, rye, light blue or blush if you’re looking to compliment a pastel color palette. (Personally I am loving the berry-brown and blush colors for my husband- I love a guy in pink!)
Kids
Girls
For the little ladies of the family, dresses to twirl with mom are so ideal for a spring session. I love ones that are comfortable and sweet, yet not overly dressy or fancy. Many of these choices are available in multiple colors and sizes, so if siblings want to match, that’s certainly an option! But a cute jumpsuit is a great option too! How adorable is the pink bow from romper? Also comes in chambray!

Boys
I am a big fan of keeping boys comfortable and somewhat casual, so that they can play throughout our session. Overly fancy dress wear, suit jackets, and dress shoes prevent them from being themselves, and ultimately parents don’t want them to get dirty. (I’ve also seem more than my fair share of boy limping with fresh blisters in brand new loafers at sessions.)
It’s most important for kids to feel free to relax and have fun. So, nice (not overly worn) crisp tees or short sleeve button downs paired with newer khakis or colored jeans are great options. For footwear, choose non-sneaker shoes that are comfy (and broken in with socks) yet stylish!
