We’ve all been there – your kiddo is having an ‘off’ day, and of course, it just happens to be on the day of your outdoor Denver photos. Or maybe your child isn’t over it, but they’re a little more shy and reserved, maybe slow to warm up. Perhaps just not interested in standing still and cooperating at all! As a Denver family photographer, I can tell you – it’s totally normal! One of my biggest goals is to make every time we’re together feel fun and engaging for not just the kids, but parents too!! Throughout my sessions, I incorporate plenty of games and fun activities because when children are having fun, their natural essence and personalities shine through, and that’s when we capture the best moments. Throughout the blog, I’ll share tips for working through rough days with kiddos while getting incredible family photos!

Embrace the Off Days
Let’s be real: children (just like adults) have really good days and some not-so-great ones. Throughout their day, something as little as not having the perfect lunch can ruin their mood. Perhaps they didn’t get enough sleep the night before, they’re feeling a little crabby, or they simply don’t want to do what they’re told! It’s okay! As a photographer and mother of twin boys, I understand the ebbs and flows of working with kiddos!
Instead of fighting it, we roll with it. I never expect kids to be 100% perfect, I mean neither are us adults! Part of any session includes taking time to let them warm up, interact at their comfort level, and find ways to engage in a way that feels right. Throughout my experience as a Denver family photographer, I’ve realized that the true key to success when working with children is simply to be flexible! Sometimes my normal routine doesn’t work for every child; that’s okay. We simply shift gears and try something different, whether a game, a different location, or a break and snack. I aim to create an environment where everyone feels safe and can be themselves.

The Power of Play During Outdoor Denver Photos
One of the best ways to keep kiddos active and engaged is to play a game! When the younger kids are focused on having fun, they forget about the camera, and we capture their expressions and personalities. Instead of insisting on standing and smiling, I love an impromptu scavenger hunt, game of tag or a tickle fest! Before you know it, instead of taking pictures, they’re playing. That’s where the lifestyle style of photography comes into play. The excitement felt while playing translates into natural and love-filled photos.

Adapting the Session to Each Child’s Personality
Throughout my many years (16!) as a photographer, I’ve learned that not every situation is the same, nor are any two children. Not every child will respond the same way or have the same interests as other kids. So it’s become crucial that I can be adaptable to each child’s mood, personality, and abilities. For high-energy kids, movement-based games are always a big hit! For shy and quiet kids, sometimes all it takes is a bit of patience and one-on-one time to make them feel comfortable. Whether your child is a bundle of energy or prefers a calmer approach, I’ll find ways to bring out their personality in a natural way!

Making it Fun For Parents During Outdoor Denver Photos
My best-kept secret? Kids pick up on your energy and follow your lead. They’ll feel it if you’re stressed about getting the ‘perfect’ photo. But if you’re laughing, playing, and having fun, they’ll want to have fun too! Let go of the pressure of forcing perfectly posed photos; life isn’t perfect. Instead, embrace the chaos, snuggle your babies, and be in the moment. The magic happens in these genuine connections, tickle fights, and in-between moments.
No matter what, family sessions are so much more than just photos. They’re about capturing your family as you are in this season of life. Years from now, you’ll fondly reflect on these photos, reminiscing on simpler times and a messier home.
