There’s this point before family photos where a lot of moms suddenly realize they’ve accidentally turned the entire thing into a full-scale production. Someone needs a snack. Somebody suddenly hates every outfit they own. One kid is crying because their socks “feel weird.” Dad’s asking if he can just wear sneakers. And somehow, family photos, which were supposed to be meaningful and fun, start feeling like another impossible thing sitting on the to-do list. As a Denver, Colorado photographer, I can confidently say this is extremely normal. Most Denver family photos start with families feeling at least a little overwhelmed before the session even begins.
Honestly, most families show up to Denver family photos worried their kids won’t cooperate, somebody will melt down, or the session is going to feel stressful and awkward the entire time. But the truth is, family photos usually go so much better once everyone stops expecting perfection.

The goal isn’t perfectly behaved children or perfectly coordinated outfits.
It’s documenting your family the way you actually are right now, before this version of life changes again. And thankfully, family photos have started feeling a whole lot less stiff lately. More families are leaning into photos that actually feel like real life instead of trying to make everything perfectly posed the entire time.
Why Family Photos Feel So Stressful Sometimes
I think a lot of the stress around family photos comes from the pressure people put on themselves beforehand.
Especially moms.
Usually, moms are the ones scheduling the session, figuring out outfits, coordinating calendars, packing snacks, reminding everyone what time to leave, and mentally carrying approximately 97% of the prep work before the session even starts. This isn’t to discount the dads out there doing the planning!

Regardless of who does the prep work- often by the time family photos actually arrive, it can already feel emotionally exhausting before anybody has even taken a single picture. And truthfully? Social media doesn’t exactly help.
It’s really easy to look at polished family photos online and assume everyone else magically showed up calm, coordinated, and perfectly behaved. Meanwhile, your toddler just licked the car window on the drive over, and somebody spilled applesauce on their shirt 14 minutes ago.
Real life happens. Trust me, as a mom of tween twin boys, I understand how quickly “let’s just take family photos” can spiral into a full emotional production.

And as a Denver, Colorado family photographer, I can promise you the families who end up loving their photos most usually are not the families trying the hardest to look perfect. They’re the families focused on being together instead of performing the entire time.
What To Wear For Family Photos in 2027 From a Denver Colorado Photographer
Family photo outfits honestly do not need to be as complicated as people sometimes make them feel. One of the biggest mistakes I see families make before Denver family photos is trying so hard to perfectly coordinate everyone that nobody actually feels comfortable anymore.
Usually, the best family photo ideas start with outfits that feel natural, easy to move around in, and realistic for your actual family.

Start With Mom’s Outfit First
Trust me on this one, start with your outfit first. Not because everything revolves around mom, but because you’re usually the one trying to coordinate everybody else while also putting yourself last somewhere in the process.
Once you figure out something you actually feel comfortable and confident wearing, the rest usually gets so much easier to build around. If you’re still staring at your closet wondering where to even begin, I also put together a full guide with outfit ideas and tips for outfits for family photos that makes the whole process feel a lot less overwhelming.
And honestly, if you spend the entire session tugging at a dress you hate or wearing something that doesn’t feel like you, you’re probably not going to feel very relaxed in the photos either. And kids are weirdly good at picking up on everybody’s stress levels.

A few local + online shops I love for family photoshoot outfits:
- Free People – dreamy textures and layering pieces
- Backcountry – practical, pretty outdoor gear that photographs well
- Aritzia – elevated basics that move beautifully
- Zara + H&M – budget-friendly finds that still look amazing on camera
- Local Denver faves: Lady Jones, Melrose & Madison, and patterns from Common Era
- A few of my favorite consignment stores – Found in Denver, Rags Consignments, and Common Threads
Colors That Actually Photograph Well Outdoors

For outdoor Denver family photos, softer earthy tones usually photograph really beautifully without feeling overly trendy or distracting.
If you’re stuck trying to figure out where to even start, you honestly can’t go wrong with things like creams, muted greens, warm browns, denim, mustard and rust tones, or deeper neutrals with a little texture mixed in. And trust me, you do not need everybody dressed in the same shade of beige like you accidentally joined a very fashionable little safari club.
Usually, a little variety actually makes family photos feel more natural anyway. The goal is for everyone to look connected, not identical.
Comfortable Kids Usually Lead To Better Family Photos

This matters way more than people realize. If your kiddo feels itchy, uncomfortable, overheated, or trapped in an outfit they hate, there’s a pretty good chance they’re not going to be having the best time. And usually, once one person gets stressed, everybody starts feeding off that energy a little.
So if your child hates the fancy shoes, no worries. Let them wear something they can actually move around in. Family photos almost always go better when kids can comfortably run around, climb on things, snuggle up with you, explore, and just exist naturally instead of feeling like tiny stressed-out wedding guests the entire time.

That’s a huge part of why I love outdoor lifestyle sessions so much for families. Your kiddos get room to move, explore, and actually interact naturally instead of feeling stuck standing perfectly still the entire time. I talk more about that here: why outdoor lifestyle photography is perfect for active families.
The Best Family Photos Usually Aren’t The Most Perfect Ones
Some of my favorite moments during Denver family photos happen in the in-between parts. The giggling after somebody says something ridiculous. One of your kiddos suddenly sprinting back over to grab your hand. Somebody is making a weird face in the background while everybody else is trying so hard to cooperate for two consecutive seconds.
That’s usually when things start feeling real.

I think people sometimes assume good family photos mean everybody smiling perfectly at the camera at the exact same time for an hour straight. But the photos families usually end up loving most later are the ones that actually feel like them.
The way your toddler insists on being carried the ENTIRE session, even though they absolutely refused five minutes earlier.

The way your tiny humans all laugh when something goes sideways or the way they still instinctively reach for your hand without even thinking about it.
Those are usually the moments that end up meaning the most later. Probably more than people realize while they’re still in the middle of living them.
Family Photo Tips For Families With Toddlers
How To Prep Kids For Family Photos Without Making Everyone Miserable From a Denver Colorado Photographer
A lot of parents worry their kids are going to ruin family photos. Trust me, they won’t.

As a Denver Colorado photographer, I’ve photographed shy kiddos, loud kiddos, wild little personalities, emotional tiny humans, kids who refused shoes entirely, and toddlers who completely unraveled because somebody handed them the wrong granola bar.
Real family life is allowed to exist inside family photos. And usually, the sessions that feel the most meaningful later aren’t the ones where everybody behaved perfectly the entire time. They’re the ones where families actually relaxed enough to interact naturally with each other.
A few things do tend to help, though. Try not to put too much pressure on the session beforehand. Bring snacks and water. Avoid scheduling photos right in the middle of normal meltdown hours if you can help it. Let your kiddos move around instead of expecting them to stand perfectly still the entire time.

And if things feel a little chaotic at first, no worries. That’s incredibly normal. Most kids warm up once they realize nobody’s expecting perfection from them. Usually, when parents relax a little, the kids do too. And if you’re specifically navigating family photos with toddlers right now, I also shared a bunch of realistic prep tips here: Tips for fun and easy family photos with toddlers. Because tiny humans definitely keep everybody humble sometimes.
Choosing The Right Location For Denver Family Photos
Location honestly changes the entire feel of family photos more than most people expect. The best locations for Denver family photos are usually not the ones that look the most dramatic online. They’re usually the places where your family can actually relax a little once you get there.

Sometimes that means open space for your kiddos to run around without somebody immediately yelling, “Stop touching that.” Other times it means easy parking because nobody wants to start family photos already sweating and carrying a diaper bag, backup outfits, and three emotional support snacks across an entire mountain trail.
Sometimes it’s just softer evening light and a location that isn’t packed with hundreds of other people also trying to take photos at the same time. As a Denver Colorado photographer, I usually help families choose locations based just as much on the overall experience as on how the place actually looks.
Because if getting there feels stressful for everybody, it usually changes the energy of the whole session a little too.
Best Timing For Relaxed Family Photos Tips from a Denver Colorado Photographer
One thing parents are usually surprised by during family photos is how much lighting changes the overall feel of everything. That softer evening light you see in a lot of photos? There’s a reason Denver Colorado photographers schedule around it so much. It photographs way more naturally, everybody looks softer, and the whole session usually feels a little calmer overall, too.

But timing matters for your kiddos just as much as the lighting does.
If your session starts right in the middle of normal nap time or ten minutes before everybody usually eats dinner, there’s a pretty good chance your tiny humans are not going to feel super emotionally available for photos. Which, to be fair, is sometimes easier said than done when you’re working around school schedules, sports, naps, and approximately seventeen other family logistics.
But even small timing adjustments can make a huge difference in how relaxed your family photos end up feeling.
What Makes Family Photos Actually Meaningful
At the end of the day, family photos are not really about proving that your family is perfectly organized, perfectly behaved, or constantly calm. Thank goodness for that because most real families are at least a little chaotic sometimes.

They’re really about documenting this version of your life while you’re still in the middle of living it. The loudness, the little personalities, the way your kiddos still instinctively reach for your hand, and the weird habits that feel exhausting right now but somehow end up being the things you miss later.
And usually, the families who end up loving their photos most are not the ones trying to perform some polished version of family life the entire session. They’re the ones who let themselves show up as they actually are.
That’s where the connection usually lives. Not in perfection.
FAQ About Family Photos with a Denver Colorado Photographer

What should moms wear for family photos?
Trust me on this one, start with your outfit first instead of trying to coordinate everybody else before you’ve even figured out what you feel good in.
The best family photo outfits are usually the ones that feel comfortable, natural, and easy to move around in. If you’re constantly adjusting your outfit or wearing something that doesn’t feel like you, it’s really hard to fully relax during photos.
Once you figure out your outfit, coordinating everybody else usually gets way easier.

What colors look best for outdoor family photos?
Softer earthy tones usually photograph really beautifully outdoors without feeling overly trendy or distracting.
Things like cream, muted greens, rust tones, denim, warm browns, soft blues, and deeper neutrals tend to work really well for Denver family photos because they keep the focus on your family instead of overpowering the photos.
And no worries, everybody does not need to match perfectly.
What if my kids don’t cooperate during family photos? Tips from a Denver Colorado Photographer

That’s incredibly normal, honestly.
Most kiddos need a little time to warm up, especially if they’re in a new place or feeling overstimulated. Some of the best family photos usually happen during the in-between moments anyway, not when everybody’s perfectly posed and smiling directly at the camera.
The goal is not perfect behavior. It’s connection.
When should you schedule family photos in Colorado with a Denver Colorado Photographer?
A lot of families love fall family photos because of the changing leaves and warmer colors, but every season can be photographed beautifully in Colorado, depending on the atmosphere you want.
Summer sessions usually feel greener and more playful, winter sessions can feel cozy and quiet, and spring family photos tend to have softer colors and blooming landscapes.
It really just depends on what feels most like your family.
How early should we book family photos?

If you’re hoping for fall family photos specifically, I’d recommend reaching out several months ahead if possible because those evening dates tend to book quickly.
Especially once school starts back up and everybody suddenly realizes the holidays are somehow right around the corner again.
