How to Include Grandparents (or Extended Family) in Denver Family Portraits

Family

If you ask me, there’s nothing more precious than multiple generations piling together in one photo. The joy of toddlers running into their grandparents’ arms, the joy on Grandpa’s face while snuggling his grandbabies, or those in-between moments of pure bliss. I’m convinced there is nothing more special than capturing those familial bonds, creating memories for years to come. As a Denver family photographer with years of experience capturing authentic connection, it’s always a treat when grandparents or a favorite aunt tag along. These special relationships should be celebrated! While I typically only photograph families of 6-8 folks, that usually allows room to invite the grandparents along! Here are a few of my favorite ways to beautifully and naturally include extended family in your photos.

Focus on Real Connection, Not Perfect Poses

The beauty of lifestyle photography is that we don’t focus on stiff poses or always getting everyone to say, ‘cheese’. When you book me for your Denver family portraits, I focus on capturing the real stuff. The hugs, laughter, and silly games you play with your kiddos. Especially when grandparents or extended family are there. Ensuring the connections they share with your children are frozen in the photo for generations. We’ll gently guide things to encourage genuine moments and connection without ever overposing or overdirecting. Perhaps your toddler loves to read books with Grandma or go on walks with Grandpa. We’ll follow their lead on what feels natural and enjoy the results!

Pair off for Intimate Mini Moments

To highlight those special relationships (we’ll talk about those beforehand), we’ll plan some time for little ‘adventures’ for a grandparent and grandchild (whoever the special bond is with). This allows them just to enjoy being together and let go of the pressure of being ‘perfect’ in front of the camera. It’s a natural pairing that feels comfortable and authentic to them. I love watching the cute bonds between grandparents and grandbabies! Planning mini-moments breaks up the session in a fun and low-key way that works wonders for the little ones.

Keep it Comfortable and Natural During Denver Family Portraits

I know that not everyone will feel comfortable in front of the camera, and some shy family members may struggle; that’s totally okay! My priority is making everyone feel comfortable and safe through relaxed and easy sessions, especially when including grandparents. Whether we’re keeping things simple in your home or heading to a favorite local park in Denver, I’ll gently direct your crew while keeping the energy light and laidback. If your family has other needs that require additional planning, let me know before the session, and we can work out a plan together! If mobility or comfort is a concern, we can plan ahead to make sure there are cozy spots to sit or activities that feel natural and are accessible for everyone.

Honor Your Family’s Unique Story

Don’t hesitate to bring things unique to your family’s history. Adding small and intentional touches throughout your session can make the photos more meaningful. Is there a family heirloom, a handmade quilt, or a vintage photo album? Bring them! We can find ways to incorporate those special details that can turn your photos into a legacy. Even if it’s as simple as taking a picture of Grandma’s favorite chair or a vintage piece of jewelry, these details help make up the stories and memories that live on through generations. Your Denver family portraits are meant to be a simple additional way to add to your family’s history, especially when including extended family!

Let the Kiddos Take the Lead During Denver Family Portraits

I wholeheartedly believe that when we let your children lead the session, we get the best photos. There’s something about letting them be kids that allows for the best moments to be shared. Kids have a way of pulling parents and grandparents into their world. I’m just there to capture that moment. Perhaps they’re asking them to play, going leaf hunting, showing off their dance moves, or simply sitting together to read a book. These are the moments that make for the most treasured and priceless memories.

Don’t Worry About the Big Family Photo

While you may be worrying about the big family photos, I promise we’ll capture a few classic group photos. However, I will keep things moving to allow kiddos to breathe and everyone to feel relaxed. Don’t worry about toddlers looking the wrong way or grandparents laughing; those imperfections often lead to the most memorable and treasured photos for years to come. The joy that is felt when looking at the laughter is something you’ll never take for granted.

Including grandparents or extended family in your Denver family portraits is more than just a way to update family photos; it’s a precious gift. These photos preserve more than faces in time; they capture relationships, stories, and love that will continue to grow. My goal is to provide pictures that will transport you to the exact way you felt on that day when you look back at them. Beyond the crazy moments wrangling kids, there is the overwhelming joy of being around family.
