Capturing Authentic Moments: Tips for Fun and Easy Family Photos with Toddlers

Family

Over the years as a Colorado family photographer, I’ve been blessed to work with families throughout their children’s lives. From newborns to teenagers, I’ve seen their babies grow. Working with growing families and tailoring my approach to the age is crucial to capturing authentic and genuine moments. Whether it’s laying back and letting teenagers do their thing or incorporating play for toddlers, I adjust and do what I can to make the moment comfortable for everyone. Photographing toddlers can be unpredictable, but their fun-loving energy and excitement bring life and genuine moments to life in family photos. Embracing their personality and curiosity lets me get the real moments showing off your incredible family bonds. Throughout this blog, I’ll share tips for easy family photos for toddlers!

Set the Stage for a Relaxed Experience

Before arriving at your Denver family photos, preparing your toddler for the upcoming experience is essential. Try to explain things in bite-size pieces, not to overwhelm them but to help them get excited for the fun of playing together. A simple explanation of ‘we’re going to meet a friend to have fun’ creates a positive tone for the session. Avoid setting unrealistic expectations or using phrases like ‘be good’ or ‘sit still.’ This can unnecessarily pressure children and prohibit their quirky personalities from shining through.

Make Sure Kiddos are Fed and Well Rested for Easy Family Photos

Just like you and me, toddlers are more willing to cooperate and engage happily when they’re fed and rested. As your Denver family photographer, I strive to work with parents to schedule your session at a time that works best for your kiddos, whether that’s after nap time or in the morning after breakfast and a good night’s sleep. It’s my goal to set your family up for success by working to accommodate any needs as best I can.

Embrace Your Kids as They Are!

Toddlers are naturally full of energy and curiosity. Instead of trying to pose them, allow them to explore and interact with their surroundings. I love letting children be themselves and be curious; the most authentic and genuine moments are created in this space. This approach keeps them interested and engaged and allows your familial bonds to shine and create lasting memories together.

Incorporate Play for Easy Family Photos with Toddlers

When capturing personality-filled photos of your children, it’s essential to incorporate games and activities throughout your session. As a family photographer, I always have a few tricks and games up my sleeve to keep little ones engaged. Whether it’s a silly song, peek-a-boo, or exploring somewhere new, these moments allow for excitement and genuine smiles. Capturing easy family photos with toddlers is a dream when kiddos can play!

Maintain a Fun + Playful Atmosphere

As the parents and adults during the session, we often set the tone. Children follow our lead and pick up on emotions quickly. To capture easy family photos with toddlers, it’s crucial to approach the experience with flexibility and a sense of humor. No matter the situation, we never know what children will do, and when a camera comes out, we get all the craziness. If kiddos are restless and need a break, we can do that! I always try to ensure your family has the support and grace required for a great experience. The unscripted and play-filled moments often become some of your favorite photos from our time together.

Family photos with toddlers don’t have to be stressful. Approaching your photos with patience and understanding of their natural behaviors allows for an enjoyable experience for everyone. It also creates a relaxed environment, allowing for priceless and authentic images to cherish for years to come. You can do this!
