How to Prep Kids for Outdoor Family Photo Session

Family

While I wish it wasn’t so, I realize that planning family photos can be overwhelming. From organizing outfits and prepping the kiddos to ensuring you’re ready and out the door on time, an outdoor family photo session can take a lot of prep work, but it is always worth it in the end! The moments captured will be ones you cherish and hang on your walls for years to come. As a Denver family photographer, I’m blessed to work with families year-round, and I have learned a lot about creating an atmosphere of fun through a child-centric experience. Read on for a few considerations if you have an upcoming session.

Dress Your Children in Comfortable Clothing

The first order of business is to set yourself up for success by dressing your children in comfortable clothes. I’m not saying you have to put them in sweats and play clothes, but not a three-piece suit, either. Instead, find a happy medium for their outfit where it’s something that will photograph well but allow them to move freely and comfortably. I’ve noticed that when kiddos feel constricted in their clothing, their mood reflects it. If they can move around and be kids, I think the outfit is a win!

Arrive Fed and Full

While meal time and photos sometimes don’t work out perfectly, try to bring your kiddos with full tummies to your session. A hangry toddler or even tween makes for grumpy photos, and requests for snacks. If there’s one thing I hear on repeat when a child is hungry during a session it’s ‘when can I be done’ but if they aren’t dying for a snack then they are content to run and play! I think that something us adults can relate to as well, right? I am a fan of doing whatever works best for your family; whether thats having a snack in the car on the way to the session, having an early dinner ahead of time, or even planning a fun treat or activity after your session. That way, everyone is excited to knock out photos and have fun as a family!

Talk to Them About What to Expect

Talking to your kids about your upcoming outdoor family photo session is another great way to prepare them! Not only does it allow their minds to begin thinking about the overall experience, but it also gives you time to discuss what to expect. One of my favorite parts of being a family photographer is capturing kids and their sweet and unique personalities. To do that, it’s important that they feel comfortable and prepared for their session. Don’t be afraid to talk to them about the pictures and their importance to you. Give them a chance to surprise you!

Let Them Be Kids During Outdoor Family Photo Session

We often expect greatness from our kids, and there’s nothing wrong with that. However, they’re kids! They will make mistakes, be silly, and play – as they should! This is another reason we love them so much: the light in their eyes and mischief is exhausting but is also so much fun. In my ‘Guide to a Child-Centric and Discipline-Free Family Session,‘ I discuss different tactics and ideas to keep expectations in line with various stages in a child’s life. Something that makes my photography style different is the authentic approach. I strive to capture your kiddos as they are: silly, wild, and absolutely adorable!

Have Fun During Outdoor Family Photo Session

Lastly, remember to have fun during your session. These moments with our kiddos are fleeting and they’re only this little for so long. Instead of getting stressed and flustered during family photos, embrace the madness and enjoy yourself. As a mother of twin boys, I’ve learned to go with the flow and let kiddos lead. Try to avoid discipline during photos and let them have fun. I know that may be difficult, but this time together is meant to capture your relationships and bonds. You’ve got this!

Enjoy this time with your kids, and let the rest fall to the side. Family photos can be stressful but I promise they’re always worth it.
