Hair And Makeup For Family Photos

Family

Everyone wants to look their “natural best” for their family photos. Sadly, we’ve all had that disappointing experience when the way you look in the mirror doesn’t translate well to a photograph! We want to look beautiful, authentic, and confident. You know that I always recommend professional hair and makeup services before your session, but I know that’s not an option for everyone! So if you’re looking for tips on how to do your hair and makeup for family photos, I’ve got you covered.

Go Easy on the Gloss for Family Photos

For your family photos, stick to matte! Glossy or dewy finishes in blush, foundation, or bronzer don’t photograph super well. Pull back on the highlighter, too. I know it looks great in person, but too much of this product can make your skin look oily in a photo. A matte finishing powder will do more to help your skin look healthy.

Also, be careful with shiny-finish gels for your hair. Shiny gels can draw attention to your hair and make it look greasy or stiff in the photographs.

Style Your Hair with Volume for Family Photos

Volume will always do you better than flat hair for photographs. That’s why we see so many amazing portraits with loose curls! To get more volume, blowdry your hair with a round brush. Depending on your hair type and texture, you might run into flyaways when you blow dry—if that’s you, a flyaway serum can solve your problems.

Enhance Natural Beauty with Hair and Makeup for Family Photos

Remember that hair and makeup for family photos is not a cover up for your real beauty. Rather, it should be the opposite. In these portraits, less is definitely more. Pick neutral colors for eyeshadow and eyeliner, and limit the amount of product on your face.

Also, the day of your family photo session is not the time for experimenting! Don’t try a brand-new way of doing your eyebrows, for example, right before the session. You’ll be happiest with your photos if you feel you look like yourself.
